The Normalized Curriculum Vitae (CVN) / Currículum Vitae Normalizado

The CVN Project was launched in 2006 by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT). CVN is a strategic project for the creation of a common space for the integration and exchange of curricular information of researchers. The systematized collection of the scientific knowledge, experience and production of every person that participates in the activities of research, innovation, teaching and technological development is available in different kinds of digital storage format.

Báez et al. (2008) define Curricula Vitae (CV) of researchers as “documents that collect data on individuals, institutions and works and, seen as a whole, are a potential source of inside information about the scientific activity of a country. But if they are not stored properly, it is not possible to conduct studies on them” (our translation).

It goes without saying that it is easier to manage a scientific system if it is well structured and integrated. If we apply this idea to the study of scientific research through the analysis of researchers´ CVs, it is only common sense that we need a homogeneous CV format in order to make the process of extracting data from the CVs easier.

At the same time, each researcher could record the data concerning his or her scientific career in the same way, i.e. following the same patterns and structure. Such a recurrent structure could be useful for easily locating the data when needed and making the document simple and clear to the reader.

Furthermore, when it comes to extracting information from these CVs for further analysis, having the information structured makes the process of locating important contents within the document easier and more efficient.

For all these reasons, there has been an institutional effort to design a standard CV format in order to create a defined structure that would make it easy to generate and modify a CV, as well as locate and extract useful information. Some examples of such formats are the Mets Schemas, Europass, and CVN.

CVN is a project whose aim is designing a normalized CV format in order to provide the scientific community with a common space for the integration and exchange of curricular information of researchers. The idea is to convert the standardized CVN information into a database which would be available to the researchers and which they could search. In this way, we would provide the R&D community with a shared repository of technological information accessible and available to potential users, as a return on their contribution to supporting research.  (http://cvn.fecyt.es/ )

CVN has been designed to offer a standardized CV format that is capable of updating, modelling and integrating every CV format that currently exists. As a result, there is no need for researchers to collect information and create new CVs whenever they have to share professional information with different agents or R&D systems. What is more, CVN provides a CV format for content-scalable information transfer adapted to the profile and needs of each researcher.

CVN makes use of the technology and methodology developed by a large group of experts that represent all fields and entities of the Spanish Science, Technology and Enterprise System (SECTE).

CVN allows research organisations with different curricular information systems to be interconnected and exchange information. The CVN is intended to become a basic instrument for the exchange of curricular information with the aim of facilitating the management of public and private R&D grants and projects in all organisations within the SECTE.

El Proyecto CVN fue lanzado en 2006 por la Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología (FECYT). CVN es un proyecto estratégico para la creación de un espacio común para la integración y el intercambio de información curricular de los investigadores. La colección sistematizada de los conocimientos científicos, experiencia y producción de cada persona que participa en actividades de investigación, el desarrollo de la innovación, la enseñanza y el desarrollo tecnológico para que todo esté disponible en diferentes formatos de almacenamiento digital.

Una definición significativa de Currícula Vitae (CV) de los investigadores puede ser la propuesta por Báez (2008): “El currículum vitae (CV) de los investigadores son documentos que recogen datos personales, institucionales y laborales, y que debe ser visto como un todo, son una fuente de información en potencia sobre la actividad científica de un país. Pero si no están correctamente archivados, no es posible usar este conocimiento para hacer estudios sobre ellos”.

Resulta más fácil manejar un sistema científico si está bien estructurado e integrado. Si aplicamos este pensamiento al estudio de la investigación científica a través del análisis de los CV de investigación, es de sentido común que necesitamos un modelo de CV homogéneo con el fin de que el proceso de extracción de datos de los CV sea más fácil.

Por otro lado, cada investigador podría grabar los datos relativos a su carrera científica de la misma manera, siguiendo los mismos patrones y la estructura marcados. Esta estructura recurrente podría ser útil para localizar fácilmente los datos cuando sea necesario y que el documento sea simple y claro para el lector.

Además, cuando se trata de extraer información de estos candidatos para su posterior análisis, tener la información estructurada hace que el proceso de localización de contenidos importantes dentro del documento sea más fácil y eficiente.

Por todas estas razones, se ha realizado un esfuerzo institucional con el fin de diseñar un formato estándar de CV para crear una estructura definida que facilite tanto la generación y modificación de un CV, como la localización y extracción de información útil, ejemplos de estos esfuerzos son los Mets Schemas, Europass y CVN.

CVN es un proyecto con el objetivo de diseñar un modelo de CV normalizado que proporcione a la comunidad científica un espacio común para la integración y el intercambio de información curricular de los investigadores. La idea es convertir la información estandarizada CVN en una base de datos a disposición de las personas que lo producen y que se puedan realizar búsquedas en esta base de documentos. De esta manera, se dotaría a la comunidad que desarrolla I + D de un repositorio común de información tecnológica accesible y disponible para los usuarios potenciales, como un retorno sobre la contribución de apoyo a la investigación. CVN ha sido diseñado para ofrecer un modelo de CV normalizado, que sea capaz de actualizar, modelar e integrar todos los formatos de CV que existe actualmente. De esta forma, no necesario que los investigadores tengan que recopilar información y crear nuevos CV cada vez que tienen que compartir información profesional con diferentes agentes o sistemas de I + D. CVN ofrece un modelo de CV para la transferencia de información de contenido flexible adaptada al perfil y las necesidades de cada investigador.

CVN hace uso de la tecnología y la metodología desarrollada por un nutrido grupo de expertos representantes de todos los campos y entidades del Sistema Español de Ciencia, Tecnología y Empresa (Secte).

CVN permite que las organizaciones de investigación con diferentes sistemas de información del plan de estudios se interconecten e intercambien información. El uso compartido de la CVN está destinado a ser un instrumento básico para el intercambio de información curricular con el objetivo de facilitar la gestión del I+D en el ámbito público y privado, y las subvenciones y proyectos en todas las organizaciones dentro de la SECTE.
